Gamcin e.V. Gambia project "children help children in Gambia"

The society was established out of a private aid organisation that had been created many years ago and is now supposed to become an even better help for the children within this official frame.

The current project “Gamcin e.V.” finally was the result of a trip to Gambia in the year 1997.

As a supervisor of a kindergarten at the German school in Stockholm at that time I reported the children in the kindergarten on my experiences at the Gambian preschool. I found disastrous circumstances; neither were there school supplies nor any brick-walled buildings, nor any toys.

At a parents’ evening I also reported the parents on the school in Bakau. Soon the idea was born to help the people there. Without hesitation the parents supplied support and so we were able to immediately start the project “children help children in Gambia”.

Since February 1998 the preschool in Bakau has been supported financially and substantially. Among other things three toilets and an appropriate cesspit were built.

At the end of the year 2000 the school was torn away, the property was supposed to be used for other things. The school was housed in degrading shacks.

On a visit in March 2002 we saw the miserable situation and decided instantly to do anything possible to raise money and so be able to build a new school.

The parents of the kindergarten and school children in Stockholm gave us their full support and in October 2003 the new preschool was opened. It was made easier with generous donations of companies like Siemens and Bosch.

At this time about 200 children between the ages of three and seven attend the school.

If possible the school is supported with everything the children need. It is supported financially, too.

Parcels with toys, school supplies and other things are delivered to Gambia for free by DHL Sweden. Thus we do not have the huge matter of expense of transporting the things. So a better support in essential things becomes possible.

After my pensioning the project passed into private hands. Elisabeth Strindlund, a mother in the German school, supported me and the organisation had a promising continuance. At this time there are 101 godchildren who are supported with 55€ per year, so that they can attend school, have a school uniform and are equipped with school supplies.

At the moment there is a dining room being built.

However, the school must be necessarily renovated and expanded, that’s why more support is constantly needed.
